Innovation is Giving Commercial Cleaning a Whole New Shine

May 5, 2025

The commercial cleaning industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation, driven by technological innovation, environmental responsibility, and heightened awareness of hygiene in the workplace. As we look to the future, cleaning is no longer just a matter of appearances—it’s becoming an integral part of operational strategy, health and safety compliance, and an organisation's sustainability goals. From smart systems and data analytics to eco-conscious practices and workforce upskilling, here are the key trends that are set to reshape commercial cleaning in the future.

One of the most significant shifts is the rise of smart cleaning technologies. The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), and automation will provide cleaning teams with the power to work smarter, not harder. For example, smart dispensers will be able to track product usage, and automatically notify facility managers when supplies need restocking, helping prevent downtime and waste. AI-powered cleaning robots will be able to map floor plans, adapt to high-traffic areas, and clean more efficiently than traditional methods. These tools not only improve accuracy and efficiency, but also generate real-time data that supports accountability and transparent reporting.

Equally influential is the growing emphasis on sustainability in cleaning practices. Clients across industries are demanding eco-friendly alternatives that support their corporate social responsibility and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. This includes the use of biodegradable, low-toxicity products, reducing water and energy consumption during cleaning, and aligning with third-party environmental certifications such as GECA or Green Seal. Sustainability is no longer just a competitive edge—it’s a business imperative. Livingstone, a large Australian importer, undertook their own research, and stated that “The growing preference for eco-friendly cleaning supplies is not merely a trend; it’s becoming a business standard. A report by the Green Business Bureau notes that 64% of companies plan to invest in sustainable cleaning products within the next two years” (Multani, 2024).

At the same time, health and hygiene have taken center stage. The COVID-19 pandemic changed public perception of cleanliness, pushing businesses to adopt more rigorous sanitation standards for their office. In 2025, we’re seeing continued investment in antiviral surface treatments, high-efficiency air filtration systems, and touch-free technologies in shared spaces. Techniques such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP) testing, which measures organic matter on surfaces, are being used to verify cleaning effectiveness at the microbial level. These science-backed practices are especially crucial in high-risk environments such as healthcare facilities, childcare centers, and food production sites.

Moreover, The Business Research Company stated that “The antiviral & antimicrobial coatings market size has grown rapidly in recent years. It will grow from$4.93 billion in 2024 to $5.44 billion in 2025 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.4%. The growth in the historic period can be attributed to long-term durability, global pandemics, industry adoption, hospital-acquired infections (hais), consumer demand, increased hygiene awareness” (The, 2025).

Another notable trend is the move toward outcome-based cleaning contracts. Clients are becoming more interested in cleanliness outcomes—such as surface germ levels or occupant satisfaction scores—rather than how many hours a cleaning crew is on site. This approach promotes efficiency, quality, and trust between service providers and their clients.

On-demand cleaning services may also gain traction, mirroring trends in other service-based industries like ride-sharing and food delivery. With just a few taps, facility managers could schedule and monitor cleanings in real time using app-based platforms. These platforms could include rating systems, digital checklists, and real-time communication, offering a more seamless and responsive experience for businesses.

Finally, the cleaning workforce itself is evolving. Companies are investing in upskilling their teams, ensuring staff are trained in operating new technologies, and understanding hygiene protocols. Micro-credentialing, digital training modules, and partnerships with vocational institutions will help to build a more tech-savvy and capable workforce, better equipped for the demands of the modern commercial environment.

Commercial cleaning is set to become a more strategic, data-driven, and sustainability-focused sector. Organisations that embrace these changes will not only meet the rising expectations of their clients, but will also help build healthier, smarter, and more resilient workplaces.
