Advanced Environmental Services offers tree protection zone fencing for projects all across South East Queensland including up to Noosa, out to Chinchilla and as far down as Ballina. Our dedicated team understands the importance of protecting trees during construction and uses this knowledge to create the best and safest outcomes on your project. If you want to reduce risks on your site while staying on the right side of environmental laws – not to mention doing the right thing by the traditional owners of the land – our tree protection zone fencing is a must.
For projects where tree protection zone fencing is required, we install a sophisticated variant of our safety fence. This fence is industry-specific and features warning signs attached at precise distances. This style of demarcation is a cost-effective compliance measure to help contractors follow their EMPs and demonstrate that they are taking their environmental responsibilities seriously. Show that you care – let us use our expert knowledge to protect your site.
Tree protection zone fencing, also referred to as TPZ, is the process of installing safety fences around sections of flora, trees and shrubs to protect them during construction. These areas are typically zoned off with visible mesh fabric. TPZ is usually marked up on Environmental Management Plans (EMP) however, Vegetation Management Plans (VMP) may also indicate where TPZ layouts need to be installed.
An EMP includes information about how your specific construction project might impact the natural environment during and after the project is completed. The plan sets our commitments for the contractor to follow to limit or avoid negative impacts on the environment around their worksite.
The Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) is the area set aside for the protection of a tree while construction is underway nearby. To avoid damage to a tree’s roots, a zone around the tree is set up by securely fencing it and TPZ warning signage is attached.
Finding where specific tree roots lie would require a root investigation with the help of a qualified arborist. As this method isn’t viable for every project, an estimate is used to determine where the tree’s crown and roots lie usually around the drip line. As a tree’s roots don’t grow in a perfect circle, the TPZ includes a reasonable distance from the tree’s stem. Safety fencing is set up around the tree protection zone to protect a tree’s roots from the impacts of construction. Therefore, no construction activity should occur in the zone such as a change in the soil level.

Protecting trees is important for the wider community as some trees hold historical importance and they must be protected during construction. Depending on the type of construction you are taking on, some trees must be preserved to ensure a beautiful finished product i.e. a garden or home renovation. In other circumstances, trees must be protected for reasons stated by the Traditional Owners of the Land.
By establishing a tree protection zone, you are setting up the tree for a long and healthy life. With a protected root system, this tree can continue to grow and create more foliage in the area, encouraging healthy vegetation within the community.
When commencing construction, trees can quickly become hazards if not carefully protected. If large trucks back into the tree trunk, excavators dig into roots or crane booms get caught in branches, these can all pose serious risks for your workers and job site. Falling trees and branches can not only be a risk to workers but also materials and machinery. By setting up a TPZ, you are in fact, mitigating risk from your worksite.
