Floor to Flu - Is Your Carpet a Hidden Health Hazard?

Carpets work hard behind the scenes. They cut noise, provide design elements for an office, and give floors a warmer feel underfoot. However, they also act like giant dust-and-germ traps. If carpets aren’t properly maintained in commercial spaces, they can become reservoirs of allergens, particulate matter and microbes. And when those nasties get kicked up into the air, they become something that everyone breathes.

What the science says

A major 2020 study published in Nature Communications introduced the idea of ‘aerosolised fomites’ (see Figure 1), which are tiny dust particles that can carry viruses and be resuspended into the air, potentially transmitting infection when stirred up. The paper showed this route of transmission in an animal model, demonstrating how contaminated dust and microscopic particles can move viruses through the air (Asadi et al., 2020). This finding raised new questions about how contaminated surfaces and floor dust might contribute to viral spread in indoor environments.

Further research in 2020 also confirmed that human activity, such as simply walking across a carpet significantly increases indoor concentrations of fine and ultrafine particulate matter (Benabed, Boulbair and Limam, 2020). In plain terms, every step can lift dust and particles from carpet into the breathing zone. Those particles can carry allergens, chemical residues and microbial life that aggravate asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions.

Why this matters to your staff

Resuspended dust isn’t just dust. It can include skin cells, food residues, pollen, microbial fragments and chemical residues, all things that can trigger sneezes, wheezes and sick days. Walking, cleaning, and HVAC airflow can also stir these particles up.
Moisture-damaged carpets can grow mold and bacteria that worsen respiratory symptoms, potentially triggering allergies, asthma flare-ups, and other long-term health issues. Left untreated, these contaminants can spread through the air, and impact the health of everyone in the workplace.

Practical steps (what smart workplaces do)

Increase frequency of professional deep cleaning. Regular hot-water extraction (steam) by professional cleaners removes deep-set dust, allergens, and microbes far better than only vacuuming.
Control moisture and fix leaks fast. If carpet gets wet, it must be dried and cleaned quickly to prevent mold.
Coordinate cleaning with HVAC/ventilation. Minimise resuspension exposure during busy hours; schedule deep cleaning during off-hours, and ensure good ventilation afterwards to clear airborne particulates.
Consider hard flooring in high-traffic or food areas. Where possible, remove carpets from kitchens, receptions or rooms with frequent spills. Hard floors are easier to disinfect, and less likely to retain biological loads.

Why the Right Choice Matters

Maintaining a clean environment in Australian aged care facilities is non-negotiable, however not all cleaning products are created equal. When it comes to residents with respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other sensitivities, the very products used to create a hygienic space can actually be the source of irritation, inflammation, or long-term health effects. Fortunately, advancements in safe, low-toxicity cleaning solutions offer a way forward, whereby cleanliness doesn’t come at the cost of respiratory health.

The Hidden Dangers in Conventional Cleaning Products

In enclosed environments, such as aged care residences, poor ventilation can make matters worse. Residents, particularly the elderly, often have reduced lung capacity and compromised immune systems, which makes them more susceptible to airborne irritants. Repeated exposure to harsh cleaning agents can lead to coughing, wheezing, eye irritation, shortness of breath, and in some cases, long-term lung damage. Science Direct , as seen in (Figure 1) stated that “Although cleaning activities and cleaning products promote hygiene and are important in combating the spread of disease, the use of cleaning products may lead to harmful exposure to primary and secondary indoor air pollutants due to the emission of products and their reactions with other compounds in indoor air” (Salonen et al., 2024).

Cleaning Products That Support Respiratory Health

Shifting to non-toxic, respiratory-safe cleaning products isn’t just about avoiding harm, it can actively support healthier breathing environments for aged care residents. Products labeled as low VOC, fragrance-free, or hypoallergenic are designed to minimise airborne pollutants. Some natural ingredients, such as vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, or hydrogen peroxide, can also deliver effective cleaning results without releasing harmful fumes. More advanced formulations using plant-based surfactants and enzymes can break down grime and pathogens just as effectively as their chemical-heavy counterparts, without compromising indoor air quality.

For example, cleaners based on eucalyptus or tea tree oil offer antimicrobial benefits while also providing a mild, natural scent, which is an important factor when artificial fragrances can trigger allergic reactions or respiratory flare-ups.

Prioritise Transparency: Choose brands that fully disclose their ingredient lists and avoid vague terms like proprietary blend.

The Hidden Dangers Lurking in Your Office Lunchroom

When we think about health hazards in the workplace, we often picture faulty machinery, poor ergonomics, or air quality concerns. However, there’s one silent culprit most employers overlook; the office lunchroom.

It may seem like a harmless space where staff grab their coffee, reheat leftovers, or share a slice of cake for someone’s birthday. However, the office kitchen is a hotspot for bacteria, cross-contamination, and the spread of illness. From shared utensils and fridges, through to microwave buttons and benchtops, this communal area can quickly become a breeding ground for harmful germs.

In a study by UK chemicals company, Chela , it was found that “Despite the fact that office kitchens provide an endless supply of clean, fresh running water, most kitchen taps at work harbor up to 1,330 germs per square inch. Another major source of contamination is the cleaning equipment itself. Research found that coliform bacteria were present on 20% of coffee cups before cleaning, however alarmingly, 100% of the cups tested positive after being wiped with a dishcloth or sponge. No E. coli was detected on the cups prior to wiping; however, after wiping, 20% of the coffee cups were contaminated with E. coli, highlighting how shared cleaning tools can actually spread harmful bacteria rather than remove them” (Hillman, n.d.).

Common bacteria like E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, and Listeria can thrive on these surfaces. Left unchecked, they can cause anything from mild gastrointestinal discomfort, through to more serious illnesses, especially for immunocompromised individuals. Add to this the risk of foodborne illness due to improper food storage in office fridges (often overloaded, under cleaned, and filled with expired items), and the lunchroom becomes less of a staff perk, and more of a ticking time bomb.

Germs Don't Clock Off

Germs spread fast in a workplace. One person who touches a contaminated surface and then uses a keyboard, door handle, or shares equipment can spread bacteria to dozens of other touchpoints within hours. In a hygiene research study conducted in a UK hotel lobby, it was stated that “ Extensive spread of surface contamination can occur in a hotel lobby in as little as 4 hours. This study demonstrates how a Targeted Hygiene intervention can significantly disrupt the journey of the germ, even on surfaces not cleaned and disinfected, resulting in a consequent reduction of infection risk via surface transmission of common respiratory infections” (Ackerley et al., 2023).

Even a single sick employee can have a ripple effect. A coughing fit in the lunchroom, touching food packaging after sneezing, or sharing a communal tea towel all contribute to the transmission of illness. The outcome of this is staff calling in sick, a drop in productivity, and rising costs for the business.

The Hidden Cost of Sickness

Staff illness doesn’t just hurt individuals, it hurts a business's bottom line. In a recent article by Clinical Director of Foremind , Louise Thompson, it was stated that “Australian workplaces lose around $33 billion annually due to absenteeism” (Thompson, 2025). Even minor illnesses that cause employees to ‘push through’ and work while unwell (also known as presenteeism) can reduce performance, and contribute to the spread of sickness among the team. Failing to maintain a clean and hygienic workplace, especially in high-touch areas like a lunchroom is not just a health issue, but a financial one.

While it's tempting to rely on staff to wipe down surfaces and keep the lunchroom tidy, the reality is that most employees don’t have the time, training, or cleaning agents required to properly sanitise high-risk areas.

Culture of Clean

Businesses should encourage a culture of cleanliness in the workplace by providing the following:

Displaying clear signage about hygiene practices (e.g., handwashing, fridge etiquette)
Ensure antibacterial soap and hand sanitiser are readily available
Encourage employees to label and date their food
Regularly audit the kitchen for hygiene risks
Replace sponges and cloths frequently

Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness in Australian schools is essential to fostering a safe, healthy, and effective learning environment. These zones are prone to the rapid accumulation of dirt, debris, and microbial contamination, which can contribute to the spread of illness if not properly managed.

A structured and consistent cleaning schedule is fundamental. Cleaning tasks should be clearly documented with daily, weekly, and term-based checklists. This ensures that no area is overlooked and allows for consistent implementation of cleaning protocols across different shifts and staff. Visibility of these schedules within staff rooms or cleaning stations can also support accountability and performance tracking. Queensland Health have also developed a disease prevention booklet , which is designed to assist staff in schools to safely manage spills of vomit, blood, faeces, and urine to prevent widespread transmission of gastroenteritis within the school facility.

Along with the physical aspect of cleaning a school, the selection of appropriate cleaning products plays a vital role. Only commercial grade disinfectants that meet national health and safety standards should be used, particularly those that are proven to eliminate bacteria and viruses commonly found in school environments. Cleaning solutions should also be safe for use around children, with low toxicity and minimal odour. To prevent cross contamination between areas, cleaning teams should adopt a colour coded system for cloths, mops, and buckets, assigning different colours to restrooms, kitchens, classrooms, and common areas.

The emphasis should be placed on regularly sanitising critical touch points throughout the day (see Figure 1 ). These include door handles, stair rails, lockers, light switches, desks, water fountains, and computer keyboards. Because these surfaces are used frequently by multiple individuals, they pose a significant risk of disease transmission if not routinely disinfected.

Staff training is another cornerstone of effective cleaning. All personnel involved in cleaning activities must be properly trained in the use of cleaning chemicals, equipment operation, safety procedures, and infection control protocols. Regular refresher training is also advised, especially in response to any new public health guidelines. Staff should also be provided with appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and eye protection, where and when applicable.

Where resources allow, investment in modern cleaning technologies can deliver greater efficiency and improved hygiene outcomes. If upgrading internal cleaning equipment isn’t within your budget, consider hiring a commercial cleaning company that has already made those investments. Why Cleanliness in Childcare is Serious Business

Maintaining high standards of hygiene and cleanliness is a non-negotiable responsibility within the Australian childcare industry. Young children are particularly vulnerable to infection and illness due to developing immune systems and frequent close contact with peers, surfaces, and shared objects. This makes effective cleaning not only a matter of best practice, but also a core requirement under Australia’s National Quality Framework (NQF), which governs early childhood education and care services throughout Australia.

The National Quality Standards (NQS), a key element of the NQF, provide a benchmark for what quality childcare looks like across seven key areas. Of particular relevance is Quality Area 2: Children’s Health and Safety, which directly addresses hygiene practices, infection control, and cleanliness of the environment. Under this quality area, providers are expected to ensure that the premises, furniture, and equipment are safe, clean, and well-maintained, reducing the risk of illness, and creating a supportive space for learning and development.

The responsibility for meeting these standards falls on multiple levels within a childcare service (See Figure 1). Centre directors are ultimately accountable for ensuring that cleaning protocols align with both regulatory expectations and best practice guidelines. Educators, support staff, and cleaners also play critical roles in day-to-day implementation, with specific duties often outlined in staff job descriptions and service policies. These roles might include sanitising nappy change areas after each use, washing toys and play equipment weekly, and maintaining hygienic kitchen and bathroom areas. In many Australian childcare centres, cleaning is outsourced to professional cleaning contractors who must also meet the same high standards under service agreements.

Recent growth means we're bursting at the seams!

There comes a time when consistent company growth over a prolonged period of time means you no longer fit into the space that was once upon a time more than suitable. That time has come, and we are excited!

We’re thrilled to announce a huge milestone in The Advanced Group’s journey—after more that 10 years at our current national office, we’ve officially outgrown it.

Shortly, we are moving into a brand-new, purpose-built facility in Stapylton, as it happens just a few hundred meters as the crow flies from our current national office site at 30 Telford Circuit, Yatala.

This isn’t just a regular move—this new office is a game-changer for our company’s future. The new facility features a spacious warehouse with massive roller doors, making it easy for trucks to come and go, boosting efficiency for our operations.

Plus, we’ll have plenty of parking, so no more struggling to find a spot in the mornings! But that’s not all—the office area itself is nearly double the size of our current one! That means more room to collaborate, more meeting spaces, and an overall better environment for our team to work, grow, and innovate.

The internal space is designed to be light, spacious and suitable for us to host industry functions and events.

An adjacent bio-basin (stormwater management area) will be transformed by our talented landscaping team into a parkland area for us to use for outdoor functions and social get-togethers on occasion. A bit of greenery and shady trees in our front yard (or side yard in this case).

Today the Advanced Group has premiered its signature scent, a fragrance that epitomizes the freshness, dynamism and robustness of the Advanced brand. This scent will be utilized and deployed across a variety of applications, including in all existing client sites of the Advanced Cleaning division.

The scent has been designed to not only reflect the ethos of the Advanced brand, but provide a fragrance that is crisp and enlightening. We spent many hours testing and sampling a variety of scents and notes to create a feeling of cleanliness that will invigorate your mood and leave a lasting impression.

For our clients, the scent will be used during all cleaning and sanitisation processes so that a distinct and lasting aroma is created. This unique scent will also give our clients assurance that our cleaners have dutifully and carefully carried-out their function.

Our signature scent incorporates a proprietary blend of notes that include sandalwood, coconut and sea minerals. This combination is earthy, fresh and crisp to the senses. Impermeable Fencing for Environmental Protection

Environmentally sensitive areas, creeks and rivers around civil works sites are most at risk during a rain event. Potential contaminants suspended in the storm water as a result of the civil works create this risk.

Advanced Environmental Services has developed a highly effective protective barrier to prevent these contaminants from leaving site. Traditional sediment control fence has small holes for slow water flow in line with Australian Standards. The storm water slowly seeps through the tiny gaps in the woven fabric pooling the flow of the water. Suspended particles (both coarse and fine) settle out during this pooling time. Thereby allowing for cleaner water to escape from site and silt to be retained.

The trouble with acid sulphates and other nasties is that they can escape the porous fabric. An impermeable barrier is therefore the best solution for this problem. Advanced Environmental Services now offer to install such a solution.

Impermeable Fencing is a 1000 micron HDPE sheet which is trenched up to 300mm into the ground. Therefore it creates what is essentially a dam around the works site.

Efficient installation of this product is achieved by our custom fence plough. This plough is attached to a T590 Bobcat. Fast, efficient installation of this product is a key benefit when storm clouds appear on the horizon. Advanced Environmental Services is servicing SE Qld and Northern Rivers NSW with Impermeable Fencing. Indeed our entire suite of products and services are on hand as required. Our Impermeable Fencing to date has been installed among other sites along the Pacific Complete project. It has also been approved by their client RMS.

Compliant silt fence, sediment and erosion control devices are important. It is also important that they’re now in place and correctly installed with the wet season currently underway. Correct installation of quality sediment control devices prevents silt, soil and other debris from construction sites and the like running into our local waterways. If that isn’t enough of a motivation, failing to install a compliant erosion control device can result in an on the spot fine. These fines have increased to just under a staggering $10,000 – especially for repeat offences*.

Why Silt Fence?

Compliant sediment and erosion control devices firstly, improve the integrity of your site works. Secondly, they also protect the nearby waterways from becoming clogged with sediment runoff. This can occur when there is a downfall of rain, such as a severe storm or cyclone. Alternatively, in some instances when a site is at risk of flash flooding. In these situations, it is important that the proper control devices are in place and that they are also installed correctly.

Proper Installation is important

In many instances silt fencing may be ‘installed’ on a building site, however, it is not ‘trenched’ or ‘dug in’. This allows water and sediment to easily run under the fence line making the entire process of purchasing and installing silt fence a face value act. Not only does this fail to protect our waterways, but it also leaves the site developer at risk of fines for non-compliance.
